How German Controllers Read a Lebenslauf in the First Two Minutes

11 May 2026

German controlling teams rarely read a CV like a biography. In the first pass they look for title fit, industry proximity, and whether you have owned a recurring close process.

The scan order that keeps appearing

Across coaching sessions in Marburg and remote work with Hessen-based applicants, the same pattern shows up. Recruiters and hiring managers glance at:

  1. Current or most recent job title and employer type
  2. Length of tenure in accounting or controlling
  3. Concrete tools and standards (SAP, DATEV, HGB, IFRS)
  4. Evidence of monthly or year-end responsibility

If those signals are buried under soft skills or a long personal profile, the application loses momentum before the Anschreiben is opened.

Practical rearrangements

Move measurable ownership higher: “Monatsabschluss for three cost centres” beats “strong analytical mindset.” Keep the profile paragraph short — three lines that name the role family you want, not a career manifesto.

When we rewrite Lebensläufe in application coaching, we usually cut generic adjectives first, then rebuild the experience bullets against the language of the job ad. That alone often clarifies whether a vacancy is a genuine match.
